Cub Hill is a small hobby kennel, primarily breeding AOAC's ~ my favorite being blues. The shelties are basically house dogs, and are my companions as well as show dogs and breeding stock.
Originally from Maryland, I went to my first dog show in 1982 and was hooked. The following year I went to a match, and while wandering and watching, I saw the most beautiful bundle of silver fluff sitting in a pen. It was love at first sight, and I knew I had to have him. Wonders never cease ~ he was for sale! and we made an appointment to pick him up the following week. This wonderful, flashy blue boy (Brad) became Ch. Fennecus Blue Collar Man (littermate to Ch. Macdega Maserati, ROM) and the foundation dog of Cub Hill.
The next major purchase to build Cub Hill was in 1985. We were extremely fortunate to purchase a co-ownership on Mainstay Apparently, an exquisite 2-year old Ch. Sunnybrook's Heritage Spirit ROM daughter, from Steve Barger (Mainstay). "Charley" began her training for the showring, and was also bred to Brad. She produced Ch. Cub Hill Bankers Hours (Keogh) the next step in the breeding program. And at the tender age of 5, she completed her Championship.
From this foundation came American/Canadian Ch. Cub Hill Steel Wheels, ROM. "Cruise" is a very special boy, loved by everyone who meets him. I am very proud of his accomplishments as a sire, passing on his great temperament, love for life, and "look" to his kids.
I selectively breed one or two litters a year. Temperament and intelligence have always been very high priorities to me, as well as breeding for type, soundness and health.
If I were asked to give advice about breeding shelties ~
it would be ... LEARN! LEARN! LEARN!
~ find a mentor;
~ listen to what they say and gain from their experience;
~ go to as many dog shows as you can and watch;
~ ask to examine dogs at the shows after judging;
~ read everything you can find on shelties;
~ breed for the love of the breed NOT for profit.
